Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head green cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef (or pork/turkey)
  • 1 cup uncooked jasmine rice
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley and dill, chopped

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cabbage Leaves: Boil a large pot of water. Blanch the whole cabbage for 2-3 minutes until leaves soften but remain firm.
  2. Sauté Filling Ingredients: In a skillet, sauté diced onion in olive oil until translucent. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Mix Filling: In a bowl, combine ground meat, sautéed onion and garlic, uncooked rice, chopped herbs, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  4. Assemble Cabbage Rolls: Remove softened leaves from boiling water. Place about 2 tablespoons of filling at the base of each leaf, fold sides over filling tightly, and roll up from bottom to top.
  5. Prepare Sauce: Mix tomato sauce with brown sugar and lemon juice in a separate bowl. Pour half into a baking dish.
  6. Bake Rolls: Place cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish on top of the sauce, cover with remaining sauce. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 minutes.
