Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (cold)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 cups fresh apples (peeled and sliced; mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)

Instructions

  1. Create the Dough: In a bowl, mix flour and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Gradually add cold water until the dough forms. Wrap in plastic and chill for 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Filling: While the dough chills, toss sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Roll Out the Dough: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out half of the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick and place it in a greased baking sheet.
  4. Add Filling & Top Crust: Spread the apple filling evenly over the crust. Roll out remaining dough to cover the filling and pinch edges to seal. Cut slits for steam.
  5. Bake: Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  6. Cool & Serve: Allow to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
