Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil (or olive oil)
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by mixing warm water with sugar and yeast in a bowl. Let sit until foamy (5-10 minutes).
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Create a well in the center; add eggs, oil, and yeast mixture. Stir until shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place until doubled (1-2 hours).
  5. Punch down the dough, divide into three equal parts, roll into ropes, and braid them together.
  6. Place braided dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet, let rise again for 30 minutes while preheating oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush with egg wash.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
